Synopsis

A Town Like Every Other attempts a graphic allegory to the unfolding democratic crisis in India.

In a small corner of the world’s largest democracy lies Aamnagar, a town like any other, conforming in its lack of appeal or controversy, ostentatiously ordinary. But one morning, residents wake up to the town’s mosque demolished with only a banner left in its wake — a promise of a better tomorrow from the Supreme Leader himself. Dust and smoke from the destruction pervades the humble little town making it difficult for the residents to see or sense anything, least of all the chain of events upending the town’s ecosystems.

Most resign themselves to their homes, some complain incessantly of the unrelenting soot, but only a brave few resist, eager to get past the smokescreen to question the unceremonious dismantling of a local institution. Soon they discover their town compromised on the path to national attention: with the Supreme Leader announcing a visit, all order is directed to clamp down on public resistance for a massive cleanup. As dust continues to diffuse through the air, relationships rot to expose the town’s underbelly of hypocrisy and religious intolerance.

Part-surrealist horror, part political rallying cry, A Town Like Every Other considers the spectre of life, living and dying, in a home come asunder. It shares kinship with The Plague by Albert Camus and Prelude To A Riot by Annie Zaidi.

The graphic novel will be published in India by Hachette.
