It's interesting that we are told in the very beginning of Metal Gear Solid 2 documentary that Hideo Kojima wanted to be a film director. It clearly informs on his game design perspective, because he is a very cinematic thinker, as far as his games are concerned.
His attention to detail as a cinematic guy can be seen in the second documentary where he outs the release date in jeopardy with his demands for perfection. I can completely understand how the tech department must have been put in the spot with such demands. But that's what separates a decent game from a work of art. Kojima's little touches is what transforms a run of the mill third person stealth shooter to a game that defines what gaming should be about.
