Inspired by Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life and Justin Roiland’s early drafts of Doc and Mharti, I want to create 2D hand-drawn animated sketches. The sketches would generally not exceed a length of more than 30 seconds. Thematically, it would be a deconstruction and a satirical take on modernity and human condition, without slipping into negative nihilism.
What I want to make is a series of 30-second shorts, lampooning a certain aspect of our experience. The mechanics of what I'm trying to achieve was inspired by Buster Keaton's style of comedy and Edgar Wright's visual narrative.
Buster Keaton, a giant of comedy, defined how comedy could be done in the era of silent movies. The way he constructed his gags can be seen in the works of other great cinematographers such as Chaplin, Wes Anderson and Edgar Wright. His influence is enormous in animation too. Early Disney movies followed the same idea in their works. Monty Python, on the other hand, is a postmodernist deconstruction of the society and the tools of cinematography. Their gags are built around the idea of cinema itself. I want to, in this project, combine the postmodernist idea behind Monty Python and the visual gag of Buster Keaton in the form of animated shorts.
A montage of deaths since the dawn of humanity, each scene being two seconds long approx. Examples of death would be people being clubbed in the stone age to listening to opera in the 19th century.
A worker’s group is gripped with revolutionary fervour and they come together to a rousing speech by a fresh-faced man. It turns out to be a clickbait video being shot and commodified with products and social media hearts/likes. Or perhaps the animator is revealed to be a corporate slob making clickbaity animated videos.
This is in line with the kind of work that I have been doing in the past couple of years. I am looking for a way to build off of that and go on to make a short film in its entirety.
